Sutton (London Borough) Sea Cadets has successfully completed its fundraising campaign to purchase a new unit minibus that will transport cadets safely and reliably to essential water-based training.

Thanks to the generosity of local organisations, businesses, families and supporters, we have successfully raised £37,512.54 to purchase a new unit minibus.

For a Sea Cadet unit, access to water is not optional. Sailing, rowing and powerboating are essential parts of the training that build confidence, teamwork and resilience. The new minibus ensures our cadets can regularly and safely reach the water and take part in the activities that define their experience.

This achievement was only possible because of the incredible support from:

Sutton Sea Cadets is proud to announce a series of outstanding recognitions and promotions awarded to its volunteers andcadets, demonstrating the unit’s continued excellence in leadership, commitment, and development.

From our behind-the-scenes leadership to front-line training and inspiring role models, these awards reflect the hard work, heart, and community spirit that drive TS Puma forward every single week.

Promotion to Petty Officer Cadet:
Lily Young has become the Sutton Sea Cadet Unit’s first Petty Officer Cadet in over 20 years - the highest rank a cadet can achieve. Reaching this level requires years of dedication, training, and progression through multiple ranks: Junior Cadet, Cadet, Ordinary Cadet, Able Cadet, and Leading Cadet. Fewer than 5% of cadets nationally reach this level, making Lily’s achievement an exceptional milestone for the unit.

Lieutenancy Recognition for Community Service:

Able Cadet Rowan Peacock has been formally recognised by the Representative Deputy Lieutenant for the London Borough of Sutton, receiving the grateful acknowledgment of the Lieutenancy of Greater London for setting an outstanding example as a cadet and community member in service of His Majesty The King. This prestigious recognition highlights Rowan’s exemplary character, commitment, and contribution to both the unit and the wider community.

SCC Unit Commander of the Year:
PO Blake Reddington, Officer in Charge at Sutton Sea Cadets, received The GL RFCA Award For The Most Outstanding Sea Cadet Corps Unit Commander.  Blake assumed the role less than a year ago, and this recognition highlights the immediate and significant impact he has made on the unit, staff team, and cadets.

Royal Marine Cadet Detachment Commander of the Year & Promotion to Sergeant:
PO Rafid Chowdhury has been promoted to substantive Sergeant and received the GL RFCA Award For The Most Outstanding Royal Marine Cadet Detachment Commander in 2024. These accolades reflect his outstanding leadership, discipline, and service. 

Best Unit Chair for London Area:
Ron Smith, Unit Chair of Sutton Sea Cadets, has received the Unit Chair Award for London Area. This award recognises the ‘Unit Chair best succeeding despite challenging circumstances’, reflecting Ron’s continued commitment to ensuring the smooth operation and development of the unit.

Sutton Sea Cadets, part of the national Sea Cadets Corps, announces the launch of its Royal Marines Detachment (RMCD), bringing unique opportunities for local youth to gain practical skills, develop leadership, and experience the camaraderie of life as a Royal Marine Cadet. The new detachment offers young people aged 13-18 a new way to build confidence and forge lifelong friendships - by joining a long-standing community that educates, inspires, and empowers through adventure, discipline, and teamwork.

The RMCD at the Sutton Sea Cadet Unit offers a schedule of activities designed by serving Royal Marine instructors, including field craft, adventure training, and water-based challenges. Through those, all Royal Marine cadets earn internationally recognised qualifications that can set them on future career paths.

"The Royal Marines Cadet Detachment in Sutton is an incredible opportunity for our community’s young people to grow in an environment of support, discipline, and adventure," said Ron Smith, Chair, Sutton Sea Cadets. "For me as a volunteer, seeing a young person discover their strengths and gain confidence is immensely fulfilling. I am especially proud that the leader of our new Royal Marines Cadet Detachment is himself a Sutton Sea Cadets graduate. His decision to give back to our charity is a heartwarming testament to the lifelong impact of the Sea Cadets experience."
