New walls, same old Vernon

New walls, same old Vernon

As Training Ship Vernon is now within the building of the Midlands Boat Station, we have clean, modern, and state of the art facilities for our young people. Our old building was charming, unique, and held memories from over 60 years of Cadets and Adult volunteers.

To ensure our collective history is remembered, new murals have gone up within the gangways to remind our Cadets of the history that is in the name of Training Ship Vernon, and to hopefully inspire them to achieve as much as previous generations have.

The various images show the old building, our massed band in front of the Ships boards, and an amazing photo taken at a Remembrance parade in 2018.

We think they look fantastic, our thanks to SCC HQ for the assistance with this project.

Cadets bid farewell to Marine Cadet

Cadets bid farewell to Marine Cadet

All Cadets who 'age out' from Cadets, reaching the age of 18, receive a frame from the Command Team showcasing their achievements over the years. Marine Cadet Rocco didn't quite hit 18 when he left TS Vernon, but his cohort of Cadets rallied to give him a fantastic send off.

Marine Cadet Rocco was presented with his frame from his time as a Cadet by Cadet Corporal Elliot and Marine Cadet Poppy and was given the opportunity to 'take the deck' for the last time.

It is fantastic to see our young people supporting each other and going the extra mile for their peers - congratulations all.

Promotion!

A huge congratulations to the former Probationary Petty Officer (SCC), and newly promoted Petty Officer (SCC) L Hazebrouck !

PO joined the team at Vernon last year and has taken a Hussain Bolt approach to her onboarding and Core modules! Completing them in record time, and we think possibly one of the quickest!

She has also attended both weekends at HMS Raleigh and is now a C.I.S instructor, a fantastic addition to the Unit and District to teach our young people radio communications and further the Units aim to be a CIS hub.

Congratulations and thank you PO!

Promotion from PPO to PO

Congratulations to former Probationary Petty Officer (SCC) Harding on her promotion to Petty Officer (SCC).

As a former Vernon cadet it is incredible to see a young person grow further, get her crown and step forward to help the next generation of young people launch themselves.

PO (SCC) Harding is Vernon's Unit Training Officer and is leading our team of volunteers, developing a vibrant training plan and listening to the views of our Cadets. Ensuring they are pushed towards achievement and promotion.

Thank you PO for all you do, you are a credit to the Unit and the corps. Congratulations on your promotion.

Cadets raise funds for equipment

Cadets raise funds for equipment

Cadets raise funds for new Unit equipment!

Our amazing young people have taken the initiative, led by Cadet Corporal Elliot, and raised over £800 for new equipment.

This fantastic Cadet led fun raising has shown how organised, mature and keen our young people are. Identifying the requirement for new equipment, and stepping up and outside to raise the funds themselves. A sponsored walk over the Malvern Hills was the challenge, and they had a fantastic time.

“This fundraiser has been a physical and organisational challenge for both myself and the participating cadets. I would like to thank them, and also thank everyone who donated towards the new kit, kit that will likely support future generations of cadets.” - Cdt Cpl Elliot.

Our volunteers have been overwhelmed with the professionalism and maturity of our cadets, and were keen to ensure they received what was required. Brand new Webbing and Day sacks for the RMCD which will go on to ensure they can take part in RMC activities, and future generations can also.

Our CO said - "I was really proud, and inspired by the way our cadets took it upon themselves, they took ownership of an issue and thought outside the box. Showing ingenuity and maturity throughout. They are over the moon with the kit, as are we. And I do have to remind them that there is £300.00 left in the kitty, ring fenced for spending on equipment or activities which enhance their Cadet experience!"

Congratulations to each cadet who took part, and thank you to everyone who supported them.
