End of Year Awards - 2024

End of Year Awards - 2024

⭐️🏆 AWARDS NIGHT 2024 🏆⭐️

Last night we welcomed cadets, adult volunteers, parents/guardians and guests of the district and local community, such as our Mayor of South Tyneside and Mayoress, to our 2024 awards evening.

South Shields Sea Cadets have had yet another successful year. We were awarded our 16th consecutive burgee for continued efficiency and a captains commendation for continuing to deliver a fulfilling cadet experience to our cadets.

We’ve seen plenty of qualifications, promotions and achievements this year, whether it be adults or cadets.

Well done to our cadets that received awards last night for their efforts and achievements. We cannot wait to see what 2025 brings for TS Collingwood. But for now, one more parade night to end the year on a Christmas high with pizza, games and movies.

Wargrave Vigil held by South Shields Sea Cadets

Wargrave Vigil held by South Shields Sea Cadets

Yesterday, on Armistice Day, cadets and staff participated in a Sunset Vigil at Harton Cemetery Commonwealth War Graves alongside dignitaries and officials from South Tyneside and local community organisations.

During the Vigil Fr. David Raine, Tyne South District Padre, conducted a service in memory of our fallen and DLI buglers in attendance played the last post followed by a 2-minute silence.

Guests were then able to witness the lights transform the graves as the sun set above them.

With special thanks to South Tyneside Council, Mayor of South Tyneside Cllr Fay Cunningham, Deputy Lord Lieutenant Col. Ann Coulston, NAAFI Break South Tyneside and other organisations in attendance for supporting this event for the first time in its history.

We aim to make this an annual event in our calendar and hope to introduce more organisations to the event in the coming months in time for next year’s vigil.

A Visit to a Warship! HMS Tyne

A Visit to a Warship! HMS Tyne

⚓️ HMS TYNE VISIT ⚓️

Some of cadets were lucky enough to be invited onboard HMS Tyne, a Royal Navy River-class offshore patrol vessel which serves as a fishery protection unit.

Lots of questions were asked by our cadets, some of them were the following:

Q: What is the percentage of woman serve onboard?

A: Around 8 out of 30, roughly 30% of ships crew on larger vessels.

Q: How often the 20mm cannon is fired?

A: Not often, but they do practice using a large inflatable called “The Killer Tomato”.

Q: How many people would operate on the bridge at any one time?

A: 2 Normally, an Officer of the Watch and a Quartermaster!

A big thanks to HMS Tyne’s crew for their time and patience in answering all our questions and a really interesting tour of their vessel.

Cadets Take Part in D-Day Memorial

Cadets Take Part in D-Day Memorial

Yesterday saw some of our Cadets attend South Tyneside Council's D-Day 80th Memorial ceremony at the Law Top and Little Haven Beach.

The cadets were joined by vessels from the River Tyne including North East Maritime Trust and Tynemouth RNLI lifeboat, as they lined the way for the commemorative torch, carried by MC William and LC Jacob, onboard our Wheelyboat Sir James Knott, to light the 80th anniversary Beacon for D-Day.

As ever, we were extremely proud to take part in such a momentous event as a unit and represent the Sea Cadets in South Tyneside with both Cadets, Adults and Boats in attendance.
