Smartly presented Sea Cadets from Huddersfield turned out in force at Asda in November where several members helped to raise valuable donations towards the Royal British Legion's Poppy Appeal.

The Sea Cadets are no strangers to collecting, having sold poppies and pins during last year's Poppy Appeal and in previous seasons. There was a good turn out of cadets, supported by the unit's Chairperson, Lt Cdr (SCC) Judith Clarke RNR Rtd, and Commanding Officer, CPO (SCC) Kiran Kundi, along with Adult Instructors, Cadet Instructors, and Committee Members.

The Poppy Appeal raises money to help members of the Royal Navy, Army, Royal Air Force, Reservists, veterans and their families.

Sea Cadets from Huddersfield were presented with trophies, shields and certificates during their annual Awards Presentation Evening. The cadets received awards for their hard work over 2016 at the ceremony held in the unit's headquarters in the Drill Hall on St Paul’s Street on Monday, 7th November 2016.

The event was also attended by the Mayor and Mayoress of Kirklees, Councillor Jim Dodds and his wife Carol, who handed the cadets their awards. CPO (SCC) Kiran Kundi, the unit's Commanding Officer, also presented awards and badges to some of the cadets.

CPO Kundi said, “The annual presentation evening is a time to reward the cadets for their hard work and many achievements throughout the year. The whole ship’s company should be proud of everything they have done this year, as I am immensely proud to be their Commanding Officer.”

A Huddersfield Sea Cadet has been appointed the Mayor's Cadet for Kirklees.

The Mayor's Cadet is a position of great honour, chosen personally by the Mayor and bestowed upon an individual from the town's Cadet groups, an individual of outstanding character, who has consistently displayed dedication at the highest level.

Ordinary Cadet Louis Boyle was appointed by the Mayor of Kirklees, Councillor Jim Dodds, at a special ceremony held at Huddersfield Town Hall, in front of family, friends and local dignitaries.

Louis has attended a vast number of unit PR and community events helping to drive the unit’s involvement within Huddersfield. Louis Boyle was chosen to be the Mayors Cadet for this reason, He is an asset to TS Highburton and he will serve the Mayor well during his appointment.

Huddersfield Sea Cadets took part in the Canal and Music Festival at Brighouse during the weekend of 20th/21st August 2016. The family-oriented event delivered not only canal activities, but also a street food and craft market, live music and a real ale festival.

The cadets took their new RS Quest sailboat - a 14’ 1” dinghy developed in conjunction with the Sea Cadets, and invited members of the public to name the boat by choosing a name from 100 ships that served at Jutland 100 years ago. The team set up a human fruit machine on their stall and challenged onlookers to try and match three of a kind. They put on a mini skipping display and enjoyed trying to out-skip each other and even got some brave passers-by to join in.

The cadets also got the chance to see the other stalls and tried their hand at rope making and sand art, creating amazing pictures out of different coloured sand.

Sea Cadets from Huddersfield took part in a war time festival when Meltham held their annual 1940s weekend. The Meltham Memories Wartime Weekend, now in its ninth year, commemorates everything from big band music and vehicles to military uniforms and fashions of the period.

The main procession got underway at 12:30 pm on Saturday, 2nd July 2016, with a military parade through the village – Meltham and Meltham Mills Brass Band led the parade, followed by Huddersfield & District Army Veterans, Huddersfield Sea Cadets, Army Cadets and Air Cadets, local school children, and a long line of vintage military vehicles.

Throughout the day there were stalls and entertainment in the village. Music and stalls took over Meltham CE Primary School, the fire station on Holmfirth Road and St Bartholomew's Church. There was a parade of vintage cars and World War II re-enactments in the school grounds where the cadets had set up their stall.
