Holmfirth turned back the clock again at the weekend. Thousands flocked to the town’s second annual wartime event, which took place at the Sands Recreation Ground. Many took the opportunity to step back in time with women dressed to impress in their vintage clothes as scores of men donned military uniforms.

Songs from forces sweetheart Vera Lynn played alongside traditional music as people wandered past vintage displays and wartime vehicles. Visitors enjoyed sampling typical wartime foods and viewing memorabilia and household items from years gone by. Entertainment was provided by ‘George Formby’ as well as theatre performers who staged 1940s style music and dancing.

A highlight of the festivities was a fly-past from a Dakota plane to the tune of the First World War lament played on bagpipes.

A memorial garden commemorating the lives of lost servicemen and women has been opened in Moldgreen.

The Heritage Memorial Garden was created to honour those who have died in service, both in conflict and humanitarian situations, since the end of World War II.

Situated behind the Tolson Museum in Ravensknowle Park , it is designed to create a place of tranquillity and contemplation.

The garden has grassed areas and flower beds encircled by accessible pathways and traditional-style stone walls.  Its centre point is a sculpture of a pair of hands holding the world.  Other features include poppy-shaped stone seats and a timeline of major conflicts since 1945 set into the pathway.

Sea Cadets marched through Huddersfield to celebrate the anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar. The parade included 150 Sea Cadets from units across West Yorkshire.

They were led by the band of The Yorkshire Regiment.

Starting from New Street the cadets marched through the town centre, proudly displaying the Sea Cadet Colours. The parade took the route of Market Place, Kirkgate and Byram Street. Participants then made their way into St Peter’s Church where a special service was held.

Trafalgar Day celebrates the victory by the Royal Navy over the French and Spanish fleets on October 21, 1805.

Thanks to an incredibly active year the Sea Cadets have more than enough to celebrate.  The Huddersfield Sea Cadets who meet twice weekly at the TA Centre have accumulated impressive activity figures over the last 12 months.  Cadets have achieved 109 qualifications including, 19 specialisations, 57 boatwork, 4 offshore power boating and 29 proficiencies.  Many of these qualifications are recognised by employers and colleges and are awarded by national bodies such as BTEC, St John Ambulance, RYA, DoE, BCU & British Rowing.  Cadets really are getting something truly beneficial from their fun and challenging experiences in Sea Cadets. 

The Huddersfield Sea Cadets have been awarded a Burgee efficiency standard by the Captain of the Sea Cadets, Captain Jonathan Holloway RN, putting Huddersfield amongst the top 20% of Units in the UK. The attached picture shows some cadets with their awards and the Unit Padre holding his Diamond Jubilee Medal.

Huddersfield Unit entered the district regatta this year. We entered into the open boys class, AC Townley (coxswain) with the crew of OC Young, Cdt's Piccavey, Faulkner and Mays. The crew along with LT Dawson, SLt Sadler, PO Kundi and the cheer leaders AC Hanson-Lunn, OC's Auty and Weavill and Junior cadet Faulkner travelled to Wakefield Unit and after registering the team and nabbing SLt Sadler to drive the towing boat for the day the regatta got under way.

For the 1st race the whole crew where anxious with not knowing exactly what would happen but the training soon took over and they took to the race like a duck to water and got stuck in. Junior Faulkner despite being the only junior section cadet had a go in the towing boat with SLt Sadler and also made up a rowing team with other juniors to have a race. The Huddersfield crew finishing runners up at their 1st attempt should be proud of their effort and take the experience with them into next years competition.
