HMS Calliope and HMS Example Visit

HMS Calliope and HMS Example Visit

On Tuesday 28th November TS Collingwood Sea Cadets took to Gateshead to Visit HMS Example at HMS Calliope, Gateshead.

During this trip we were invited into HMS Calliope for some "Flight Deck Ganes" which involved Bucket Ball, the object of this game resembled Netball where the Cadets were not allowed to move from the spot that they caught the ball in passing it to and from each other and scoring goals in a bucket, where a selected person stood on the bench with it.

Whilst the Northumbria URNU students entertained 2 groups with this game, the third were invited onboard HMS Example by C/O Lt Duncan Napier. He showed the cadets around the ship, into the sleeping quarters, galley and engine room before taking them outside for a look around the deck and bridge of the vessel.

One all trips around the vessel were finished, we all posed for a group photograph on board the ship.

Thank you to HMS Calliope, Northumbria URNU and C/O Lt Napier for showing us around your vessel and entertaining us for the evening, we hope to see you again soon!

Throughout the past year we have received lots of praise and thanks from local businesses and the community, we also recieved the District Achievement Trophey, this was awarded to us by being the best Unit in the Tyne South District.

We aim to continue in our hard work and efforts to be awarded a 10th consecutive Burgee in 2018, plus more awards and tropheys along the way.

South Shield Masonic Lodge Charity Donation

South Shield Masonic Lodge Charity Donation

Recently we found out that South Shields Masonic Lodge had chosen us as their charity sponsor and were donating £200 towards our unit.

We receieved this generous donation on Sunday after the Rememberance parade. The cheque was presented to one of our cadets, Cdt Barrow and First Lieutenant CPO Dupear by Fred Thomas.

This donation will now go towards our Overseas Fund for 2019 when we aim to take upto 24 cadets to Malta.

2017 Poppy Appeal

2017 Poppy Appeal

This year we saw our cadets participate in various different parades and appeals in South Shields for the Royal British Legion and Remeberance Day.

Our cadets showed their support at St Stephens Church, The Merchant Navy Memorial, Morrisons, King Street and also the Rememerance Day parade on Sunday the 12th, selling poppies and laying wreathes.

We paid respect to those lost and still fighting for our future and friends and family of cadets and the unit.

80th Year

80th Year

Today we saw in our 80th year as a Sea Cadet Unit.

South Shields Sea Cadets continues to open it's doors to children ages 10 to 17 years old, just like it did back in 1937.

From basic seamanship and catering to trips abroad and voyages onboard ships, we still strive to give our cadets an experience that they will remember for the rest of thier lives.

We can't wait to see the next 80 years!
